ICJA02 Place of remembrance in Datteln 02.07.2022 - 16.07.2022

Commemorating as a way towards peace! The Evangelical parish of Datteln is the origin of a Christian Peace Movement, which builds up a European network for international encounters and voluntary service as a contribution to peace. In the last workcamps with the help of the local artist Ms. Ulrike Speckmann, volunteers created colorful messages of peace, which were shown in public places. And again, the artist is happy to help you to get in a creative process of painting and designing. This year, the volunteers are invited to create a place of remembrance for Jewish culture in Datteln. This memorial will be presented to the public, it’s foreseen at the site of the former synagogue. During the second week, the volunteers are supposed to do activities together with the residents of the Johanneswerk. The Johanneswerk is an institution for adults with mental disabilities and the volunteers are invited to develop a daily programme together. Members of the parish will be happy if volunteers are ready to contact the different social groups of the town, especially the children and the older generation.

ICJA01 Stand up against dictatorships, war, and human rights abuses in the post-Soviet countries 24.06.2022 - 03.07.2022

We are representatives of four communities from Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia and Ukraine who live in Baden-Württemberg and actively work for human rights and freedom in these respective countries. For this project we are cooperating with the Peace Workshop Mutlangen. After more than 30 years of dictatorship regimes and last big attempts of regime change in our three countries, we feel the need to organise a common meeting to exchange our experiences in activism and non-violent successful resistance. We want to reflect on our newly formed joint cooperation from January to June this year and plan further actions until the end of the year and talk about the goals. New ideas and opinions that you bring to the work camp are very valuable for us.

We invite volunteers from the post-Soviet region and interested people from Germany to join us in learning more about political systems and the current human rights situation in the countries concerned as well as about national and international human rights movements. After the work camp, you are welcome to support our activities against dictatorship regimes and for democracy and the rule of law. Besides creative workshops and informative lectures, there will also be a cultural and entertainment programme (walks, film evenings, concerts and much more).

The „Himmelsfels“ (Heavens rock) in Spangenberg is the territory that occupies 8 hectares. In Himmelsfels there are so-called embassies, i.e caravans that have been modified artistically to be tiny houses for German and international guests of the Himmelsfels. Every year in Himmelsfels there are events dedicated to art, culture, Christian gospel music and youth Encounter. This summer season, there will be three international youth camps comprising about 80 – 150 young people from various countries.

The volunteers will help to enrich the current youth camps by becoming part of our international staff, by supporting the activities for the youth and the infrastructure of the camps. The program will take place on the “Himmelsfels” itself.

The “Himmelsfels” foundation is a Christian organization, which aims: to develop spaces for intercultural and ecumenical exploration, as well as to motivate people for a life characterized by equality and common values. The project targets especially young people who support and are eager to join the community of Christian spirituality. For more information, please visit the website.

ICJA04 To remember – to meet – to understand [Dachau] 30.07.2022 - 12.08.2022

This is not a classic Workcamp, the project is part of an international Youth Meeting.

Good command of English or German and interest in the topic is required.

Participation fee: 200,- Euro to be paid via bank transfer or at the project.

For 40 years, the International Youth Meeting is a place for young people from all over the world to discuss issues concerning the past, the present and the future. Young people will look at the history of the concentration camp at Dachau, National Socialism and present forms of exclusion, racism and discrimination.

The principles of exchanging ideas, experiencing different cultural backgrounds, as well as Holocaust education are the core ideas of the International Youth Meeting. It is primarily organized by a team of volunteers. Many survivors of the National Socialist regime will talk about their personal experiences of persecution, whether in the concentration or labour camps or working in the resistance.

To remember – to meet – to understand and to work for the future will be our guiding slogan in these two weeks. We will learn about the history of the concentration camp Dachau and other aspects of the National Socialism in Germany. We will always ask: What did we learn about this? Where do we find racism, antisemitism and discrimination today? The program consists of different workshops, discussions with eye-witnesses and Holocaust survivors, guided tours through the Memorial Site, tours in Dachau and Munich, day trips. There is also time for personal conversation, sports, parties and the chance to experience the historical sites from at the present time. As there will be contacts to German native speakers, workcamp is good possibility to improve your German language skills.

We will offer volunteers to give a contribution to the programme: You can give your own workshop or teach other volunteers some dances or games. Feel free to contact your camp leader even in the time before the youth exchange.

There will be free time for fun and games, day-trips, entertainment, getting to know the people, going to cafés, etc. However, please notice that there is not enough free time for self-organized day trips during the International Youth Meeting.

ICJA07 Peace Center Sievershausen 31.07.2022 - 13.08.2022

The Peace Studies Center in Sievershausen (Antikriegswerkstatt Sievershausen) was established in the premises of the Sievershausen Lutheran Church community more than 50 years ago. During that time, the Vietnam War escalated. Nowadays there are several buildings, including a guesthouse and the well-known "Anti-War House" with an assembly hall for our events, located in a park-like area along with a church older than 1000 years on the edge of the village. The peace center shows through its diverse program, that peace work has political, historical, educational and cultural aspects. Throughout the year one can visit exhibitions, author readings, lectures and many cultural events. The peace education offers of the seminar area include teaching units, trainings for school classes and church groups on current and historical topics.

The Peace Studies Center is located on the edge of a former battlefield. An exceptionally bloody battle took place here in 1553. Analogous to the well-known motto "swords to ploughshares" we redesign this to "battlefields to playing fields". The participants of the work camp will design elements of this playing field and build an information board. Anyone who appreciates creative work can work on a multi-part mural under expert guidance, which is to be developed on the topics of climate justice and fair trade.

You will learn some essentials of peace work and receive basic training in non-violent conflict management by professional trainers. During the second week, Human Rights topic is being discussed and we will visit the memorial in the former Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Because of their importance and in relation to the aforementioned creative work, we will also discuss the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to spend an evening in a German family and reverse, the group will invite the people of the village and region to an “Evening of encounter” (Abend der Begegnung) at the Peace Center.

For the leisure time, the group can use facilities of the seminar house and make an excursion to Hannover or Braunschweig.

ICJA08 Power of nature and volunteers - build a yurt in the forest! Roßdorf 31.07.2022 – 14.08.2022

The Jugendhof Bessunger Forst e.V. is a non-profit children's and youth meeting place and one of the oldest self-managed operations in Germany. Located in the forest on the outskirts of the city of Darmstadt, we maintain the tradition of a learning and recreational place close to nature and life with down-to-earth, resource-saving accommodation. For over forty years, groups of children, youth and adults, families, clubs or political initiatives have come together here and found plenty of space to learn, run around, play, relax, meet, develop or simply be outside and together. On Sundays in spring and summer, we open the ForstLove Café with a colorful musical program. Excursionists, city walkers and fresh air fans can relax here in the green idyll on the large grounds. Our offer is especially aimed at families and people with low incomes, as the appreciation of heterogeneity and diversity is very important to us.

Together with members of the association and experts we would like to build a wooden yurt for groups of children. After the introduction to implement the idea, we will start together. We will saw, drill, screw and hammer under expert guidance with professional tools and machines. In parallel, we are going to redesign the outdoor area around the yurt, plant native shrubs, expand the deadwood hedge, and do typical gardening on the grounds. Volunteers are also invited to help at the Sunday Café. Do you have a heart for baking cakes or enjoy being behind the counter? Then we look forward to your contribution to share this day together. During your stay there will also be other groups at the Jugendhof, with whom you can sit around the campfire in the evenings and exchange ideas. There will also be an event by and with women with migration history in Germany and finally a colorful and loud festival of electronic music.

The Jugendhof is located at the edge of the Bessunger Forest, which can be easily explored from here. On hot summer days the shady forest offers a good opportunity to cool down and wide open meadows invite you to a relaxed picnic. If you walk for an hour through the forest and meadows, you can reach a beautiful swimming lake with a small sandy beach. Darmstadt is also very interesting culturally, as it was one of the centers of European Art Nouveau at the beginning of the 20th century. Since 2021, the Mathildenhöhe artists' colony of the city of Darmstadt is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We would like to recommend a visit to the impressive and unique area, including the museum and the Orthodox chapel. Fancy some more action? Then visit the climbing park high up in the trees with its very different levels of difficulty.

ICJA10 FoKus Festival – RABRYKA Goerlitz 02.08.2022 – 16.08.2022

"RABRYKA" is a unique space for youth culture and social life, situated in an abandoned factory ground. You can see it as an open space for all kinds of youth and social culture. Currently it offers a wide range of possibilities for kids, youths and adults: Repair shops, DIY and creative workshops, a youth center and urban gardening. There is enough inside and outdoor space for gatherings and sports, sharing things and opinions, playing music and partying together and … much more!

At the same time, RABRYKA is a part of an initiative, which highly motivates people to develop the civil society of Goerlitz. Everyone is invited to join meetings that focus on the vision of a society, which respects the values of tolerance, equality and cross-cultural empathy. RABRYKA is a fictional word connecting the polish word for factory fabryka and the first letter of red. Red are the bricks of the buildings of the former factory.

Your help is needed to prepare space and facilities for the Fokus Festival. A 3-day festival (12.-14.08) - 5 stages, many workshops, speekers' corners, food and drinks! You are invited to show your individual creativity and talents; you should be ready to work together in international teams. Supported by a carpenter and a metalworker, you can create fancy furniture for the visitors, colorful decoration for the stage, or help by expanding the BMX trail and designing a luminous advertising. In addition, the support of the kitchen team is quite important. It would be great if the group could contribute something special for the Fokus Festival. Plus, volunteers will offer support during the festival itself and will encounter the visitors discovering their creations.

ICJA13 Care for Nature Prenzlau 09.07.2022 - 23.07.2022

For many years now, the City Hall of Prenzlau has been hosting successful workcamps. Prenzlau is the centre of the historic Uckermark region. The city is located about 100 km north of the capital Berlin, 50 km from Stettin in Poland and 80 km from the Baltic Sea. The area is surrounded by natural parks (for example, Biosphere Reserve Schorfheide-Chorin) and large lakes.

Prenzlau is the birthplace of the later wife of the Prussian king, Princess Friederike Luise von Hessen-Darmstadt, and it is the birthplace of the neoclassical landscape painter and friend of Goethe, Jacob Philipp Hackert. Without a doubt: the city has a myriad of stories to tell. However, Prenzlau is not only an old, but also a young city, even though it was first mentioned in 1234. Over the last decade, Prenzlau changed its appearance a lot: the historical and the modern were linked, the view of the lake opened up, and the city breathed new life into it. Thanks to green areas, a promenade along the lake and newly renovated historical buildings, visitors feel like entering a lakeside resort.

In the middle of the 20th century, the "White Mountains" of Prenzlau were a popular destination for bathers at Unteruckersee. Today, the site is located in a nature reserve that provides a habitat with rare plants and animals. Moreover, there is a hiking trail, that crosses the area and offers hikers on their way to Prenzlau (about 5km away) a magnificent view over the lake and the opportunity to rest and recharge their batteries.

The aim of the work is to preserve and restore semi-arid and dry grassland areas in the area of Unteruckersee. These grasslands are habitats for particularly heat-loving insect and reptile species. These in turn serve as a food source for rare bird species that had long disappeared and now become native again. The local spread of scrub and tree species prevents the formation of dry meadows and can have undesirable effects on the local flora and fauna in the long term. The aim of the work is to remove scrub from a larger dry meadow where numerous wild shrubs have grown over the last 10 years. Then, we would like to plant the wood in the form of Benjes hedges along the footpath. The Benjes hedges will in turn provide shelter and habitat for numerous small animal species. With their work, the participants make a valuable contribution to the preservation and further development of the local natural environment with its diverse plants and animals.

The two work camp weeks are professionally accompanied and supported by the Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the Uckermark district.

This means volunteers will search for amphibians in the natural habitat and do the scientific documentation of the real occurrence of these animals.

Within the territory of Schulbiologiezentrum you will help out to take care of the Yellow-bellied toads used for breeding and do minor maintenance work. Volunteers will see all states of the development of these species and we hope you will experience the moment when they are adult and when YOU release them into the wild.

ICJA14 Feel the historical heritage in centuries-old Bedheim Castle 08.10.2022 - 22.10.2022

Bedheim castle was first mentioned in the year 1169 and was devastated and reconstructed several times in its long history. In the time of German Democratic Republic (GDR) it slowly rotted. Now renovation is in charge of the family of Ruehle von Lilienstern. A non-profit association is supporting the renovation work and using part of the castle for its own activities. Since 1992, this association has been organizing workcamps. Year by year new working fields have been developed: a social therapeutic nursery was added, the association  is running an organic garden and since 2007 the castle also runs a garden café and a small castle museum where you can admire the bones of prehistoric dinosaurs, once living in this region.

During the last 20 years, the castle became a sociocultural center for this remote region: in the castle, there is a perfect room for celebrations; around the castle, one can find various types of gardens and meadow for goose and goats. In addition, there are training courses and cultural activities available. The aim of this project is to create an atmosphere where people with or without disabilities may come, live and work together without any prejudice against handicap, nationality or religion.

Inhabitants of the castle are looking forward to meet us, to work with us and hear our suggestions and ideas and to create a peaceful world together!

Volunteers are invited to help in the care and preservation of this ancient monument. We will work 6 hours daily, to do painting and cleaning inside or to maintain the garden around the castle. In the garden, the work depends on the season, usually it is harvesting fruits, cutting trees, bushes and hedges. Encounters with kids and people of the region are foreseen.

Volunteers will enjoy the natural beauty of the environment. We can make excursions to places of cultural and historical interest (e.g. Weimar, the city of Goethe and the concentration camp Buchenwald). We can have discussions and lectures about German history, society, culture and politics (the German East-West border was only 9 km away from Bedheim). There will be the possibility to encounter with young people of the region and getting to know more about the countries of the participants.

ICJA09 EU-LIFE BOVAR Hildesheim 08.08.2022 - 19.08.2022

You are welcome to help with practical nature conservation for amphibians in the conservation areas. Together you will structure small ponds and re-establish ideal living conditions for amphibians. The monitoring of the target species is also a task this summer.

Kurzbeschreibung
