For 25 years, the Gestapokeller and Augustaschacht Memorial Association has been actively promoting a culture of remembrance as a local player, with the aim of raising awareness of the crimes committed by Nazi Germany in the region, particularly with regard to forced labour. More than 2,000 people were imprisoned in the ‘Ohrbeck labour education camp’ and forced to work in an ironworks, clearing rubble and removing bombs. Many of them lost their lives. Most were forced labourers and came from the Netherlands and the former Soviet Union.
Since 2020, the memorial site in Hasbergen near Osnabrück has been working on a new permanent exhibition and a continuous educational programme to teach young adults in particular about democratic values, human rights and the dangers of fascism.
It is a rare opportunity to participate in an archaeological excavation on site of a location where Nazi crimes were committed:
-you visit the Gestapo cellar and Augustaschacht memorial sites
-you take an in-depth look at the history of forced labour and National Socialism
-you will excavate, clean, and document the archaeological finds on the former camp site (discovered objects will be presented in the exhibition)
For this specific camp we will invite a group of volunteers from Global South partners to participate, so it will be a great chance to meet people from different regions of the world and exchange ideas.
