Bedheim Castle (first mentioned 1169) is now a sociocultural center in a rural area. It offers space for cultural initiatives, concerts, exhibitions, and a flea market. With gardens, a café, and nature surroundings, it is a place for community life. Since 1992, workcamps bring volunteers together with residents. The project promotes inclusive living for people with and without disabilities. A cat named Rudie is part of the community.
The Volunteers wil help to maintain the castle and grounds. Tasks include clearing the meadow orchard, harvesting apples (and making juice), working in the organic garden, and doing painting and cleaning inside the castle. Work depends on weather and includes contact with local people and children.
The Volunteers are going to learn about nature and local culture. Excursions may include Weimar (city of Goethe) and the former concentration camp Buchenwald. Discussions on German history, society, and the former East-West border (9 km away) are planned. Exchange about participants’ cultures is encouraged.
Accommodation is a Group stay in the “Remise” (former coach house). Beds provided (no sleeping bag needed). Meals are prepared together, mainly vegetarian. Heating is via wood stove; it can be cold.
The Location is in western Thuringia, near Coburg (28 km), surrounded by Franconian landscape. Weather can be rainy and cold in autumn.
Basic German or English recommended. Bring warm and work clothes, slippers. Rubber boots are provided.
