This project promotes peace through remembrance. It is organized by the Evangelical parish of Datteln, part of a Christian Peace Movement and the network “Youth Action for Peace (YAP)”. It is based on a historical event on Good Friday 1923, when Étienne Bach and Karl Wille chose reconciliation during the French occupation of the Ruhr area, inspiring international peace work.
Datteln with around 35,000 inhabitants lies in the Ruhr area. Nearby are Recklinghausen, Dortmund, and Münster. The river Lippe and Münsterland are close.
Week 1 – Artistic work: Volunteers create art about peace (e.g. murals, benches, installations). With artist Ulrike Speckmann, they design a large cloth inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream”.
Week 2 – Social/outdoor work: Volunteers support the social center “Ev. Johanneswerk”, helping with gardening and simple renovation. Interaction with residents with mental disabilities is encouraged.
Focus on expressing peace through art and learning how local history led to an international peace movement. Exchange with different social groups, including children and elderly.
Leisure:
Excursions to local sites, including the crossing of 4 channels and nearby attractions.
The Stay is at “Etienne-Bach-Haus”. Camp beds and pillows are provided;but please bring a sleeping bag.
Interest in art and social work required. Self-commitment for child protection needed.
